Treating Sciatic Pain In Bristol

Sciatica

The Sciatic Nerve

The sciatic nerve runs from the back of your pelvis, through your buttocks, and down both of your legs, stopping in your feet. The sciatic nerve is the longest in the human body.

Symptoms

Compressing or irritating the sciatic nerve can cause pain, tingling and numbness to radiate from your lower back into your buttocks, groin and one or both legs. It can be extremely painful. Sneezing, coughing, or sitting for long periods can increase the pain. Some people will also experience muscle weakness and numbness in the affected leg.

What causes Sciatica?

One of the most common causes of sciatica is a herniated or “slipped” disc. This is where one of the discs that sit between the vertebrae bulges out and presses on the lumbar nerves in the lower back. Other less common causes include spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the nerve passages in the spine. A spinal injury or infection, or a growth within the spine. These can all be potentially serious and urgent medical attention may be required.
