What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic is all about helping you function to your absolute best. Whether you are in pain or not, whether you are healthy or sick. Chiropractic is the art of removing any ‘blockages’ or ‘restrictions’ within your body to allow it to do what it does best. And that is to heal and thrive. Those who want to get the most out of their body and life choose regular chiropractic care.
Chiropractic works by helping improve how your nervous system is working. As we know, the brain controls every single function of the body, and with that, the human body has an innate ability to self-heal and self-regulate. Chiropractic works with the spine and skull to remove any pressure or interference upon the brain and nervous system. Therefore, allowing the body to reconnect and work to its best ability.
Chiropractic is for everybody, from newborn babies to those nearing their time on this planet. It is never too late to start your chiropractic journey, and indeed, it is never too early. Chiropractic helps to get the sick people well and keep the well people at their best.
Who is chiropractic for?
Chiropractic is for everyone, from newborn babies and pregnant women to men and women well into the 90’s and beyond. Chiropractic helps both abled and disabled people to regain their health or maintain their health without the use of drugs or surgery.
Do adjustments hurt?
No, generally corrections do not hurt. The chiropractic adjustment aims to create more ease within the body. However, some patients who see us are in a lot of pain, and therefore because they are in pain already, the positions required to give the adjustments can be a little uncomfortable. Our practitioners are highly trained and experienced and aim to ensure you have the most comfortable and enjoyable experience possible.
What is the ‘cracking’ noise?
Corrections do not always make a noise, but sometimes there is a ‘cracking’ or popping sound associated with them. This is a release of gas, like a bubble of air popping in the fluid sac of a joint, as it moves when being adjusted.
Will I be sore the first night?
Quite often, you will leave the first adjustment feeling improved. Sometimes though the focal area can elicit an inflammation reaction causing some discomfort for a few hours later on. Icing the area can help, but it is very hit and miss as to who will need to do this.
Do I need to remove any clothing for my appointment?
No, for routine adjustments you will not need to remove clothing apart from heavy jackets, for example, and shoes, however, it may be more comfortable to be in loose-fitting clothes. For your New Patient Consultation, tighter, gym type clothing is ideal for helping with the accuracy of the posture assessment. For gentlemen, we may ask you to remove your shirt during the scanning process. For ladies, we have gowns to wear for the brief examination period. During regular correction visits, patients will typically remain clothed.
How long does it take to get better?
This will depend on several factors, including how healthy you are before starting care and how long the problem has been there. How proactive you are in your attitude to your health. How old you are. How healthy you want to be. Your current posture. Your approach to reaching your health goals and finally, how committed you are to getting better. Here, at My Chiro, we do understand that healing takes time, and we aim to help you fully recover and go beyond just feeling better.
How long do appointments last?
Your first appointment will last about 1 hour and typically does include your first corrective adjustment. Your regular correction sessions are very specific and effective; they can last up to 10 minutes. Sometimes appointments may be shorter, and some may be longer, depending on your needs. Give yourself 15 minutes in total if you are scheduling your day. We believe in doing absolutely what is necessary to get your body functioning better, no more and no less.
Are chiropractors registered?
Yes, following the 1994 Chiropractors Act. To call yourself a chiropractor in the UK you need to be qualified and registered with the General Chiropractic Council. All chiropractors at My Chiro are registered.
Will my insurance cover this?
Your insurance may contribute to your care, and this does vary from insurer to insurer. At My Chiro, we are dedicated to delivering the best service to our patients. We do not deal directly with insurance companies. However, we are happy to provide all the necessary reports and receipts needed for you to make a claim.
Benefits of chiropractic
Improves mobility
Known to reduce stiffness
When stiffness is reduced, joints move with more ease making movements such as walking, jogging or bending easier. Good mobility improves your ability to exercise which subsequently brings other benefits.
More restful sleep
Proven to improve quality of sleep
Small subluxations can be the cause of your pain which can reduce your ability to get to sleep and impair your quality of sleep. Subluxations also put pressure on the nervous system, causing disturbances in the body.
Reduced need for pain medication
Reduce sick days
Back pain is the second most common reason for sick leave. Chiropractic reduces back pain, therefore reducing the need for painkillers and sick leave.
Reduce Osteoarthritis
In conjunction with mobilisations and exercises. Reduces physical stresses causing inflammation
When the spinal joints become stiff the body and other joints are placed under much more pressure than they can deal with. Chiropractic ensures all joints are working evenly, which can improve arthritis and even reduce the risk of it occurring.
Improves nerve health
Spinal subluxations reduce nerve flow
Chiropractic adjustments remove spinal subluxations. Subluxations can be the cause of nerve irritation which can reduce the nerves ability to function and cause nerve pain
Reduce headaches
Chiropractic care for headaches
Numerous research studies have shown that chiropractic adjustments are very efective for treating tension headaches, especially headaches that originate in the neck.
